World Animal Protection Detail
WSPA has handed over 11,000 of your signatures calling on the Mayor of London to safeguard the future of the Metropolitan Police Service’s Wildlife Crime Unit (WCU) to Deputy Mayor, Stephen Greenhalgh.
In May 2012, we asked you to sign an open letter to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, calling on him to recognise the importance of wildlife crime policing in the city.
WSPA is battling the illegal wildlife trade as a global priority, with recent studies suggesting the trade is valued at between 7.8 and 10 billion US dollars each year with links to drugs cartels, organised crime, and even terrorism.
The WCU represent an essential frontline service in the battle against this brutal trade. As the UK’s capital, London is a major hub for the illegal wildlife trade, with one of the world’s largest seizures of rhino horn taking place in Kensington.
WSPA recently met with Deputy Mayor, Stephen Greenhalgh, who has responsibility for policing and crime in London, to present your signatures. We asked Mr Greenhalgh to recognise the impact wildlife crime has on animals and their habitats, and requested his support in tackling wildlife crime in the capital.
Mr Greenhalgh acknowledged the important role played by the WCU in the fight against the illegal wildlife trade and the support WSPA has provided so that its work is strengthened. He has also asked for WSPA’s help in addressing wildlife crime in London, and we’ll have more news on this exciting development in 2013.
