Endangered Animal Species

Endangered Animal Species Detail
“The focus of advance research is to find out threats to common leopard, check out its migration range and for adopting latest measure on scientific grounds for conservation of wild cats in the region”, Wasim Ahmad, a coordinator for the international non-governmental organisation, working to save the endangered species of wild cat.
Talking to APP, Wasim said that their target was to install radio collars on at least two leopards in order to track their movement. For this purpose traps have been set up around the park.
Though the population of big cats in Galiyat is satisfactory, but still the species continues to face numerous threats like a fast shrinking habitat, human-leopard conflicts and reducing forests, Waseem added. Galliyat, he continued, is home to the largest population of common leopards in the country and reduction of habitat for the rare wild species is posing a threat to its survival in the region.
Similarly, human-leopard conflicts, arising in response to attacks on livestock, also pose danger to the survival of wild cats in the area. This was evident when in November locals discovered a leopard, poisoned by a local since it was feeding off his cattle.
The matter has been complicated with the paucity of space in Ayubia National Park which has left no choice to the animals but to spread to inhabited areas and seek prey. “Its time to draw guidelines for leopard management in Galliyat so that a self-sustained breeding population of leopard can co-exist with human beings,” he added.
“Human-carnivore (meat eating animal) conflict always has negative impact on carnivore population because of retaliatory killings and when the predator does not find wild prey due to reduction in habitat, it starts depending on livestock, and in some cases even on human beings,” Wasim elaborated.

who started the captive breeding program. Eventually a small number of the white offspring were
sent to zoos overseas, but the Indian Government has indicated that it will not allow any more to
be exported. Now the zoos cooperate among themselves in their own breeding program.
The white tiger is not an albino, a creature totally without pigment, but a mutation in
which the usual orange color is replaced by white. In every other respect it is perfectly normal.
The breeding programs aim at conserving the gene for white fur. This is done by breeding
white tigers even with orange tigers so that the gene, though recessive, is carried by the orange
cubs. When these cubs are bred with others with the same kind of heredity, a number of the
next generation are white, following the laws of Mendelian genetics
All of the big cats are seriously threatened with extinction. A number have already
become extinct. As large carnivores needing substantial supplies of fresh meat, they inevitably
come in conflict with man. They are killed out of fear, for trophies, for fur for the fashion trade,
because they kill livestock, because it is a traditional way of demonstrating bravery. Man’s
weapons continually improve so they cannot escape. Man takes over their habitat for himself so
there is literally no place for them.
Unless large wilderness areas are set aside, unless we allow the big cats space for their
world, they will no longer be a part of our world. And when any part of our world is lost, we are all
immeasurably poorer.

Endangered Specie

Endangered Specie Detail
According to scientists, more than one and one-half million species exist on the earth today. However, recent estimates state that at least 20 times that many species inhabit the planet.
In the United States, 735 species of plants and 496 species of animals are listed as threatened or endangered.
266 of these listed species have recovery plans currently under development.
There are more than 1,000 animal species endangered worldwide.
There are more than 3,500 protected areas in existence worldwide. These areas include parks, wildlife refuges and other reserves. They cover a total of nearly 2 million square miles (5 million square km), or 3% of our total land area.
Aquatic species, which are often overlooked, are facing serious trouble. One third of the United States’ fish species, two-thirds of its crayfish species, and almost three-quarters of its mussel species are in troubl
e.

Information About Animals Detail
A large number of farmers in India depend on animal husbandry for their livelihood. In addition to supplying milk, meat, eggs, wool and hides, animals, mainly bullocks, are the major source of power for both farmers and drayers. Thus, animal husbandry plays an important role in the rural economy. The gross value of output from this sector was   358 billion (US$6.5 billion) in FY 1989, an amount that constituted about 25 percent of the total agricultural output of 1.4 trillion (US$25.5 billion).[1]
Operation Flood, the world's largest integrated dairy development program, attempted to establish linkages between rural milk producers and urban consumers by organizing farmer-owned and -managed dairy cooperative societies. In the early 1990s, the program was in its third phase and was receiving financial assistance from the World Bank and commodity assistance from the European Economic Community. At that time, India had more than 64,000 dairy cooperative societies, with close to 7.7 million members. These cooperatives established a daily processing capacity of 15.5 million liters of whole milk and 727 tons of milk powder.[8]
Today, India has the world's largest dairy herd (composed of cows and buffaloes), at over 304 million strong,[3] and stands first in milk production, with 112.5 million tonnes of milk produced in 2009-2010.[3] India is also the third largest egg-producer in the world, at over 180 million eggs being produced every day or 65.7 billion eggs for the year 2011-12,[4] and the world’s sixth largest producer of poultry meat.[5] While the majority of India’s animal products are consumed domestically, exports are growing. India is the top global exporter of buffalo meat, and is also the fourth largest exporter of soybean meal, an important ingredient in commercial feed for farmed animals.[5] In addition, India’s leading poultry producers, including Suguna, Venky’s, and the Amrit Group, are increasing sales to countries in other parts of Asia and the Middle East. International investment is also expanding.[6] In 2008, U.S.-based Tyson Foods acquired a 51 percent stake in Godrej, an Indian conglomerate that is a major producer of animal feeds and poultry, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has an equity stake in Suguna.[5] An estimated 200 million egg-laying hens are kept in battery cages, and more than half of the 2-billion-plus “meat” chickens produced each year are factory-farmed. Vertical integration and contract farming for poultry and eggs is also widespread. While the milk and cheese sectors still include many small-scale producers and cows and buffaloes in extensive systems the number of large, factory-style dairy operations is increasing.[7]
